INTRODUCTION:

We have been privileged to witness the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon children in many nations. Literally, thousands of adults and children have easily received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit through this simple teaching. He has come in a variety of ways, painting a pallet of wonderful memories! However, we believe that believing children already have the Holy Spirit living within. The baptism or infilling of the Holy Spirit just brings a new dimension of His operations in and through us. We believe that all Believers (of any age) can and should receive the Baptism of Holy Spirit—not to get to Heaven, but to have POWER on earth to witness with resurrection power. According to the Scriptures, as soon as a believer is saved, he is a candidate for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:2). We believe that “the promise is unto you and to your children…” Acts 2: 39a. We believe that God promises in Joel 2: 28 that in the Last Days, “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters will prophesy….” We present this lesson to the nations as a participator in that outpouring.

LESSON AIM:

Our aim is to clearly teach the Biblical doctrine about the HOLY SPIRIT, using simple visuals and object lessons. Our prayer is that both children and adults will:

1. Recognize and cooperate with the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives, as He makes them like Jesus.
2. Hunger to be baptized in the Holy Spirit and have faith to receive this experience.
3. Become bold witnesses for Jesus.
4. Be able to teach others about the Holy Spirit.

LESSON OUTLINE:

This lesson can be taught in three separate sessions:
PART 1: The Holy Spirit is God
PART 2: The Work of the Holy Spirit in Every Believer
PART 3: The Baptism of the Holy Spirit
PART 4: Luke 11:11-13 (to use with the invitation)

INSTRUCTIONS:

We recommend that you read and write down all of the scripture references, but only use those that the Holy Spirit quickens to you while teaching. We also recommend that you adapt the visuals to your own style of teaching and to the age of the people whom you are teaching, teaching in your own words. You may change the order of presentation in each section and/or omit some visuals. The visuals are numbered according to the script, with the numbers on the bottom right corner of the picture.

This lesson is also a part of the ICMI Children’s Ministry Manual Vol. 1, with portions available in several languages. The international copyright is secured by the International Children’s Ministry Institute, USA. Simple black and white patterns are available for use by teachers and children. Part1

Who is the Holy Spirit?

MEMORY VERSE:
Acts 10:38, How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil. (Teach with motions, acting it out).

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
He is God, part of the Trinity- Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Hold up one finger, bend it, and ask “How many fingers is this? [1] How many parts? [3]) That is like our God. He is one God, revealed to us in three persons. (Hold up the middle 3 fingers like a W in English…omit for other languages)

Will- Father is the Will of God.
Word- Jesus is the Word of God
Work- Holy Spirit is the Work of God

HE IS REPRESENTED BY VARIOUS SYMBOLS IN THE BIBLE

(Show each symbol while teaching about that characteristic of the Holy Spirit).

A1 DOVE

Luke 3:22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

A Dove is gentle, pure, tender, easily to be grieved. (Is. 38:14, 59:11) We must respect Holy Spirit. We must not draw attention to ourselves in a meeting or grieve Him when He is ready to speak or move. (Move the dove picture over the heads of the children to show that He moves as He wills.)

A2 WIND

Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it fi lled the whole house where they were sitting. (See also John 3:8)

On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came like the sound of a mighty, rushing WIND. Wind can be very gentle or very powerful. We do not know which way it will blow. Have you ever seen the wind? (Fan the picture back and forth on a child…gently, then stronger) No, we cannot see the wind, but often we can feel it. Sometimes, we can see what it does. That is how the Holy Spirit is. Sometimes we can feel Him. Sometimes we can see what He does, but we can’t see Him! The Hebrew and Greek word “spirit” means “wind”. The word “wind” in Acts 2:2 is “ruach” which means “breath of God”. (Study: Ezekiel 37:5; John 20:22; Job 41:21; Isaiah 42:5; Psalm 147:18)

A3 OIL

Hebrews 1:9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” (See also Acts 10:38)

Oil was an Old Testament symbol for God’s authority, ability, and anointing for service. It was often poured on the head of the one chosen by God. (Use the picture of the vessel to pour over the head of a child.) (I Samuel 16:13, Exodus 29:7) Oil was also used as a symbol for healing, light, unity, joy, gladness and blessing. The Holy Spirit anoints us to do what God calls us to do. Now, He abides in us to give God’s ability, authority, and anointing to do or say what He tells us to do or say. He also brings healing, unity, and blessing. (Study: Exodus 25:6; Luke 10:34; Joel 2:19; Esther 2:12; Deuteronomy 11:14; Psalm 92:10b)

A4 FIRE

Acts 2:3-4 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fi re, and one sat upon each of them. (4) And they were all fi lled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came with visible tongues of Fire! Fire purifies, separates, and draws a crowd. When a house is “on fire”, people run to see it. When a person is spiritually “on fire”, people are drawn to Jesus in them and through them! Deuteronomy 4:24 says that God is a consuming FIRE; Psalm 104:4 says He makes His ministers flames of FIRE. Jeremiah 20:9 says that sometimes God’s Word is like FIRE in our bones. (Study: Deuteronomy 5:4; Psalm 39:3; Malachi 3:1-6)

A5 WATER

John 7:38-39 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will fl ow rivers of living water.” (39) But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorifi ed.

In the Bible, the Holy Spirit is compared to water, rain, rivers and a fountain. Water cleanses, refreshes, quenches thirst, and causes life to appear. Jesus said that “out of your inner most being shall flow RIVERS OF LIVING WATER.” He was speaking about the Holy Spirit. We can have a daily supply of fresh, LIVING WATER flowing in and through us! (Ezekiel 47) Ezekiel talks about the River bringing LIFE and HEALING. (Study: Hosea 6:3; Revelation 22:1; Psalm 36:8, 46:4; Isaiah 41:17-18, 44:3.)

A6 WINE

Acts 2:15-16 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. (16) But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

On the Day of Pentecost the disciples prayed so fervently that the people thought they were drunk. Peter stood up and said, “These are not drunken like you think they are……but this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel.” Sometimes the Holy Spirit moves in us so powerfully and joyfully, that it might seem like we are “drunk.” In the Bible, “wine” speaks of abundance, blessing, and prosperity. (Study: Isaiah 16:10, 24:11; Joel 1:5, 2:19,24; Job 32:18,19) (Ephesians 5:15-20) Paul says in Ephesians not to be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is: “be not drunk with wine…..but be filled (continuously) with the Spirit.” Have you ever seen someone addicted to earthly wine? How often do they want to drink? Everyday!! How much do they want to drink? Until they come “under the influence”. When they are “under the influence” how do they conduct themselves? They lose self-consciousness. They become bold. They don’t worry about tomorrow. They are free from fear. They become generous (wanting to buy for everyone). They are ready to fight. They have a loud song to sing coming down the street in the midnight hour when you are trying to sleep. God does not want that for His children, but, He wants us to be continuously FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT! He wants us to “live under His influence” until we are free from fear of men, bold, not worried about tomorrow, generous, ready to fight the enemy, not easily offended, and with a SONG OF VICTORY IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR!! He wants us to be wise and be prepared for these Last Days. We can live full of the Holy Spirit, speaking to ourselves in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs!

Part2

The Work of the Holy Spirit

MEMORY VERSE:
Romans 8:14, For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Teach, using a chalk board, erasing one word at a time, repeating the verse each time.)

B1 HE TELLS US WE NEED TO ACCEPT JESUS

John 16:8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

When we heard about Jesus dying on the cross for us, perhaps, we could hear thoughts saying “You are not so bad. You don’t need Jesus. He’s not real.” (Point to the grey voice cloud) Those could have been your own thoughts, or thoughts planted by God’s enemy, Satan. On the other hand you might have heard thoughts like this, “You know you have sinned. You need a Saviour. Jesus is real. Raise your hand. Go forward for prayer.” That was the Holy Spirit telling you that you needed to accept Jesus.

B2 WE ARE “BORN AGAIN” BY HIM

John 3:6 That which is born of the fl esh is fl esh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

When we said “yes” to Jesus, His blood cleansed us from sin and we were born of God’s Holy Spirit. Now the Holy Spirit lives in us. He took the darkness of sin away, and made us clean, whiter than snow in our heart.

B3 HE TELLS US WHEN WE SIN

John 16:8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Every time we are tempted to sin, the Holy Spirit warns us like a bell ringing. He makes a way to escape the temptation. (I Corinthians 10:13) He warns us not to sin. When we sin, He tells us that what we have done is wrong. We must learn to listen to His “bell”. He is HOLY. He is in us to work the holiness of God.

B4 HE TEACHES US THE TRUTH

John 14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

The Holy Spirit reveals TRUTH to us through the Bible and through anointed teaching or preaching. (I John 2:27) He makes it real to us. On the other hand, “His truth shall be your shield” (Psalm 91:4) Like a shield, He protects us from words that sound good, but are not completely true. Inside, He says “NO.” But, when the words are true and based on the Word of God, even though the teaching might be new to us, inside He says “YES or AMEN!”

B5 HE SHOWS US THINGS TO COME

John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

The Holy Spirit shows us things that our natural eyes have not seen and our ears have not heard. (I Corinthians 2:9,10) He can give us a prophecy, a dream, or a vision.

B6 HE HELPS US TO REMEMBER GOD•S WORD

John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.(See also I Peter 1:23; II Peter 1:20-21)

The Holy Spirit wrote the Word through different men many years ago. He helps us to understand it. If we are faithful to study and memorize it, He will bring a verse for the situation to our mind faster than we can ask a computer. (Move the visual from the heart to the head) He will help us to remember God’s Word when we are in need or to help others in need. Also, He brings His word to mind to keep us from sinning. (Psalm 119:11)

B7 HE IS OUR COMFORTER

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (KJV)

In the middle of the fiery darts of the enemy (a failed exam, troubles at home, best friend leaves, etc.) He comforts us. “He is the God of all comfort,” II Corinthians 1:3. “He is a very present help in trouble,” Psalm 46:1b.

B8 HE DRAWS OUR ATTENTION TO JESUS

John 15:26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. (See also John 16:14)

He lives in us to make Jesus real to us. He helps us to love Him and want to please Him. He makes Jesus real to others when we talk to them about Jesus. He “testifi es” of Jesus in us and through us.

B9 HE HELPS US TO BE MORE LIKE JESUS

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, self-control. (23)goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, Against such there is no law.

When we yield to the Holy Spirit, He produces the fruit mentioned in Galatians in us. He fills our hearts with the love of God. (Romans 5:5) He helps us to “take up our cross and follow Jesus.” (Matthew 10:38; Mark 8:34) He helps us to “die daily” to our own will. (I Corinthians 15:31; Romans 8:13)

B10 HE HELPS US TO BE MORE LIKE JESUS (CONTINUED)

Just as a tree needs nourishment to grow and produce fruit, we need the Life of the Son to flow through us Jesus would say, LOVE like Jesus would love, DO what Jesus would think, SAY what like to the Holy Spirit, He will listen (Point to each arrow while produce the nature of Jesus. toby His Spirit, in order speaking). As we cause us to THINK Jesus would do, and GO where Jesus would go. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God,” Romans 8:14. “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh ….If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit,” Galatians 5:24b, 25. (Give examples of children choosing between the flesh and the Spirit) “You are playing cricket (or football) when Dad calls for help….what does the flesh want to do? What would Jesus do?”....”You are watching TV or talking on the phone and Mother calls you to help with your little sister. What does the flesh want to do? What would Jesus do?”

Part 3
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit

INTRODUCTION: THE HOLY SPIRIT AS THE POWER OF GOD

(The introduction is a transition to the Baptism in the Holy Spirit…It may be omitted)

The Holy Spirit moved in creation. He displays God’s power and put the Word into action.

In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit moved upon certain men at certain times to do special tasks. Samson did some mighty acts in Judges 14 & 15, but he was strong ONLY when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him.

Gideon was strong when God gave him wisdom, faith and power to deliver the people in Judges 6 & 7. (Give other examples)

God promised that the day was coming when EVERYONE could receive this power, even children! “In the last days, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh…..and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,” Joel 2:28-29.

After Jesus was baptized in water, the power of the Holy Spirit came upon Him. Everywhere He went He showed that God had POWER over Satan (Acts 10:38). He healed the sick, raised the dead, etc. Jesus said that He had to go away so He could send the Holy Spirit. He wanted His followers to have the same power.

After His death and resurrection, just before returning to Heaven, Jesus met with His followers and commanded them to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every person,” Mark 16:15. Then in Acts 1:4, while He was still giving them instructions, he commanded them to WAIT in Jerusalem for the Father’s promise of the Holy Spirit. This is the same Holy Spirit that Joel prophesied would be outpoured. Peter, who had denied Jesus three times, was baptized in the Holy Spirit. Then he stood and preached with great POWER in Acts 2. He preached to thousands and 3,000 were saved in one day! The power of the Holy Spirit made a weak man strong!!

MEMORY VERSE:
Acts 1:8, But you shall receive POWER after you are baptized in the Holy Spirit and you will be my witnesses. (Teach, using the picture of dynamite or make a large word saying POWER. Every time you hold up the picture or word, they must stand and shout the word “power”)

(Tell about the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2. Use any visuals available or just simply tell it.)

THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

C1 WHEN WE ARE BAPTIZED IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, HE GIVES US POWER TO WITNESS

Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The explosive power of dynamite is just a small picture of the mighty, power of God. The Greek word for “power” is “dunamis” which is the origin of “dynamo”—a machine which generates a consistent and continuing supply of power!! The Holy Spirit within us generates power to enable us to be witnesses (martyrs) for Christ. Not only are we enabled to bear witness of Jesus, we actually BECOME witnesses unto Him. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead has come to empower us!! Hallelujah!

C2 WHEN WE ARE BAPTIZED IN HOLY SPIRIT, HE GIVES US A NEW LANGUAGE, “TONGUES”

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

When we speak in tongues, it can be a Heavenly language or an earthly language that we do not know. When He fills us, as the River of the Holy Spirit flows in us, our part is to receive by faith and begin to speak to Jesus in new “tongues”, as the Holy Spirit gives us the ability. In Acts 2:4, the Bible says that THEY began to speak. They did the speaking. He gave the power.

WHEN WE PRAY IN “TONGUES” OR “IN THE SPIRIT”…….

C3 IT BUILDS OUR FAITH

Jude 1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

When we pray in tongues, we are building our faith. The more we pray in tongues, the stronger we will be on the inside. It will become easier to recognize God’s voice and have faith to obey Him. A portion of God’s very own faith is growing inside of us. It is the same faith that spoke the world into being. It is the same faith that parted the Red Sea.

C4 IT HELPS US TO PRAY IN GOD’S WILL

Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (27) Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

We do not know how to pray like God wants us to. We are limited by our human understanding. Father in Heaven has His divine WILL in each situation. Jesus, the WORD, sits at His right hand praying the will of the Father, but He is touched with the “feelings of our situation.” While we are praying in tongues, the Holy Spirit on earth moves in us to reveal the WILL of the Father, giving us the WORDS to speak, and, sometimes, touching our hearts with the feelings of the situation. When the Holy Spirit is guiding us in this way, “IT WILL BE DONE ON EARTH EVEN AS IT IS BEING SPOKEN IN HEAVEN,” Matthew 6:10. Hallelujah! (Ephesians 6:18; I Corinthians 14:5)

C5 IT HELPS US TO WORSHIP

I Corinthians 14:15-17 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. (16) Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? (17) For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edifi ed. (See Also Acts 2:11; 10:46; Philippians 3:3; Ephesians 5:18, 19)

When we sing in the Spirit, our hearts are worshipping Jesus. Holy Spirit can give us “new songs” to sing…… simply fresh songs from our heart to Jesus, or prophetic songs from His heart to His people. He can anoint us to play instruments with a new melody or give us a creative dance that brings His glory. “God is a Spirit. They that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth,” John 4:24. (Sing in the Spirit as an example.)

C6 We don’t understand what we are saying, but God does!

I Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Sometimes, He may give us a language to use in prayer that is known by someone else, but we do not know it. When we are praying or singing in “other tongues”, it is a mystery to us, but God understands. I believe it is a delight to His heart to hear His children speaking words of faith to Him in prayer or words of love and adoration in worship!

C7 IT HELPS US TO RESIST THE DEVIL

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; After the instructions to put on the “whole armor of God” in Ephesians 6:11-17, verse 18 says “praying always in the Spirit” Praying in the Spirit (tongues) is a vital part of our armor against the devil. When we are constantly praying in the Spirit, we are building our faith, preparing to obey God and to resist the devil. We can wear all of the armor, when our faith is strengthened. With the shield of faith, we can stop every fiery dart of the devil.

OBJECT LESSONS

#1 Have a dry large sponge. Explain how we are dry without Holy Spirit. Put the sponge in a bowl of water until it is full. Then wring it out while talking about how He wants to use us to give life to others. But then, we must again be filled ourselves. We must be continually filled with Holy Spirit!!

#2 (Show an empty clear glass) “Our lives are empty without Jesus” (From a larger container, slowly pour water, vinegar, and blue ink or coloring into empty glass. Make sure to pour the water to the top of glass.) When we ask Jesus into our hearts, His life pours into us. As we obey the Holy Spirit, we become more and more like Jesus. (Stir 1 table spoon of baking soda into the glass full of water with a tray under it. It will bubble over.) Jesus wants us to have POWER to give life to others, so He baptizes us with the Holy Spirit.. Now, we have power to tell others about Jesus! (You may add Eno to plain water if baking soda and vinegar are not available.)

#3 (Show a balloon full of air) You know, all Christians have temptations and troubles. Sometimes, we are not strong enough to resist. (Put a burning candle under the balloon until it pops.) Our Heavenly Father wants to give us power to resist temptation….power to do His will. (Have a balloon full of water) Peter was ashamed of Jesus and lied and swore that he did not know Him. After he was filled with the Holy Spirit, he had the power to stand before thousands of people and preach!! When we are filled with the Holy Spirit we have POWER. (Put the burning candle under the balloon with water. It will not pop!) The Holy Spirit gives us power to live a victorious Christian life!

Part4

Invitation to Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Ask, “How many of you would like to have POWER to witness to your family and friends? If you want Jesus to baptize you in the Holy Spirit, please come forward.” (Give instructions to those who come forward: They must know that they are saved. Lead them in a salvation prayer, if you are not sure.)

VISUALS D1, D2, D3

(Read Luke 11:11-13)

Luke 11:11-13 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? (12) Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? (13) If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

D1 If we say, I’m hungry, Daddy, please give me some bread. Will he give me a rock? No!

D2 If you ask him for an egg, will he give you a scorpion? NO!!

D3 If you ask him for a fish, will he give you a snake? NO!!

If your earthly Dad, being imperfect, will give you good gifts, how much MORE will our Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit when we ask? Are you hungry to be filled with the Holy Spirit? When? He is ready to fill you NOW. What kind of God would He be to make you hungry, and then say ‘No?’ In the Bible, when any in a group were filled, they were ALL filled. He is going to fill YOU right now! He is going to fill all of you!”

(You may want to sing a simple worship song all together, like “Alleluia”. Then have the musician play one chord softly while you are praying. Then you can easily sing in the Spirit using that one chord.)

Tell them “When we lay hands on you, Jesus is going to baptize you in His Holy Spirit.” ( He will! As Jesus is doing His part, the child should begin to speak in new words as Holy Spirit gives him the ability (Acts 2:4) Now, stand in front of the child and lay hands on his head in FAITH and Jesus will do what He promised. Children receive so easily. However, a few will need gentle encouragement to begin speaking in tongues while the Spirit is moving upon and through them. Never give them a word to repeat. It’s okay to keep your eyes open and watch what’s happening.)

(OR…if the group is large, you can lead them all in a prayer instructing them to repeat after you,) “Dear Jesus, Thank you for saving me. Thank you that I am your child. Thank you that you are going to fill me with your Holy Spirit right now. I am going to begin to speak in tongues as You give me the power. Amen” (Then you can tell them to lift their hands, as an act of faith.) Declare: “BE FILLED WITH the SPIRIT in JESUS NAME…..NOW. Lift your hands and begin to praise Him by faith.”

(It is good to have each child who has received the Baptism of the Spirit immediately help pray for the next child, using his new language. Lead them in singing in tongues. Remind them that they have received POWER to witness and a “secret language” to talk to God everyday. Ask for any adults who are sick. Call them forward. Show the children how to lay hands on the sick!)

The preceding instructions are ONLY guidelines. Allow Holy Spirit to be creative! He is too big to be put in a “box”.
